9 Breathtaking Things to Do on Fraser Island (K’gari)
You won’t want to miss these incredible things to do on Fraser Island (K’gari) on your next visit!
Whether you’re planning on staying at Kingfisher Bay resort for the weekend, making use of your 4WD vehicle or you’re looking to complete a few hiking adventures, K’gari Fraser Island is a paradise waiting to be explored.
It’s the largest sand island in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Listed area, so there’s no shortage of things to do!
Let’s dive into my 9 favourite & memorable activities on K’gari Fraser Island.
1. Swim at Lake McKenzie
Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora) is a perched lake and is without a doubt, the jewel of the island. The freshwater lake sees visitors flock to its crystal-clear waters all year round.
How to Get to Lake McKenzie
Getting to Lake McKenzie is possible with and without a 4WD vehicle.
With a 4WD
Follow the marked signposts across the island and you’re free to visit Lake McKenzie at will.
Without a 4WD Vehicle
Access to Lake McKenzie is achievable even if you don’t have a 4WD vehicle of your own.
Travelling from Kingfisher Bay Resort to Lake McKenzie
- Book a 4WD taxi drop off with Fraser Island Taxi Service
- Book a K’gari Fraser Explorer Tour from Kingfisher Bay Resort
- Self-guided hike from Kingfisher Bay Resort to Lake McKenzie (approx 20 kms return).
2. Stay at Kingfisher Bay Resort
If you’ve never stayed at Kingfisher Bay Resort before, you’re in for a real treat.
This incredible resort is nestled amongst nature, providing guests with the ultimate & immersive eco experience.
There’s plenty to do at the resort:
- Guided walks
- Boat tours
- Kayaking
- Segway tours
- Restaurants & bars
- Tennis courts & more.
Best of all, you can experience the beauty of K’gari by staying at Kingfisher Bay Resort even without a 4WD.
Enjoy sunset over the water at Kingfisher Bay Resort’s Sunset Bar.
Pull up a seat by the water & enjoy a spectacular afternoon as you watch the sun go down (one of only a handful of places to watch the sun set over the water on the East coast of Australia).
3. Stay at K’gari (Eurong) Beach Resort
This should be your choice of accommodation on the eastern side of the island.
Perfect for:
Formerly called Eurong Beach Resort, the rooms have recently been refurbished, offering an elevated experience for guests compared to previous years.
If you’re looking to switch off, disconnect and experience this side of K’gari Fraser Island, this is where you should stay.
The Eastern side of the island is home to attractions such as:
- Eli Creek
- The Maheno Shipwreck
- Champagne Pools
- The Pinnacles
4. Beauty Spots Tour with K’gari (Fraser) Explorer Tours
If you’re short on time, this is the tour I’d recommend. You can jump on board these specialist, airconditioned 4WD vehicles from Hervey Bay or Kingfisher Bay Resort for an incredible day out.
(If you’re staying at Kingfisher Bay Resort, you can arrange for this tour to pick you up on the way as it departs earlier at River Heads).
The Beauty Spots Tour with Fraser Explorer Tours stops at the following locations:
- Eli Creek
- Central Station
- Lake McKenzie
- Maheno Shipwreck
- The Pinnacles (Coloured Sands)
Lunch & snacks are all provided on the day, making it a seamless and hassle free way to see the island.
5. Hike from Kingfisher Bay Resort to Lake McKenzie
If you’ve got an adventurous spirit, you can absolutely hike from Kingfisher Bay Resort to Lake Mckenzie as well!
I’ve personally done this a couple of times, and it’s a brilliant way to spend the day.
The hike is approximately 20 km’s return (read the full article here).
Ensure you’re dingo safe when undertaking any activity on the island.
Be sure to pack all food, drinks, sunscreen and essentials for the day.
6. Remote West Coast K’gari Tour with Tasman Venture
This might be one of the best things to do on Fraser Island – if not, Queensland. It’s basically The Whitsundays of Southeast Queensland and is a must visit.
Departing from the Hervey Bay Marina, you’ll jump aboard the vessel ‘Tasman Venture’ for a full day Remote K’gari Fraser Island experience.
You’ll stop at the following locations:
- Awinya Creek
- Wathumba Creek
- Bowarrady Creek
- Platypus Bay
- And many more secluded & private beaches.
Morning & afternoon tea, lunch, snacks and tea and coffee are all inclusive.
This tour is an absolute must do!
7. Experience a Whale Watching Tour
The Hervey Bay and Fraser Coast is world renowned for its whale watching season.
What better way to see it than from the coastline of K’gari Fraser Island.
I’ve listed the following tour operators I’d recommend that depart both Hervey Bay and K’gari.
- Tasman Venture Whale Watching (4 hours)
- Whalesong Cruises Whale Watching (morning or sunset)
- K’gari Salty Safaris Whale Watching (half day)
